Is data science only for substantive specialist?

Now is a great hype for data science. Everyone is learning it. Lot of courses amd boot camps being offered. But however unlike software engineering does being a data scientist require specialisation in a certain domain? Say if you want to be data scientist in biology you need specialisation in such. I hope you get my point
