Is OHE Useful for KNN?

I know that with KNN we are computing distances and as a result we can only use numeric values and dtypes. However, if we do One Hot Encoding before passing the data through the KNN Algorithm, does this add anything to the model or is this just a weakness of this algorithm in particular?
