Artropodoj (kiaj muŝoj) estas la plej abundaj surteraj animaloj laŭ specikalkulo.

Surteraj animaloj estas animaloj kiuj vivas ĉefe aŭ entute surtere (ekz., katoj, formikoj, emuoj), kompare kun akvaj animaloj, kiuj vivas ĉefe aŭ entute en akvo (ekz., fiŝoj, omaroj, polpoj), aŭ amfibioj, kiuj fidas al kombino de akvaj kaj surteraj habitatoj (ekz., ranoj). La termino surtera aŭ surterema estas ankaŭ ofte uzita por speciojn kiuj vivas ĉefe surgrunde, kontraste al arboloĝantaj specioj, kiuj vivas ĉefe sur arboj.
