How panel data analysis can be used and what are the uses of panel data analysis/regression?

I have a dataset with Cross-section and Time-Series Data. After doing some reading I came accross an area named as "Panel data analysis/regression". However, I am still not clear how and why we use "Panel data analysis/regression".
Mentioned below are some brief information about my dataset:
- Research samples: Data from 1970 to 2010, 6 countries
- Dependent variable = Real GDP growth, per capita (%)
- Independent variables =Population growth (%), Household consumption, Government
consumption, Capital formation (shares of GDP, %), Natural resources
(share of GDP, %), Trade ((imp+exp)/GDP), Inflation (%), Life
expectancy (years)
It would be really great if someone can explain how and why panel data analysis can be used for datsets like mine.
