Error in Spyder: States variable is undefined, program still runs
$begingroup$
I recently received the following code to work with:
import seawater as sw
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
def getPlotVars():
print("how many plots do you want to make?")
numPlots = input()
varName =
for i in range(int(numPlots)):
print("what variable do you want to plot against depth (Choose from: s, t, p, d) for plot number " + str(i+1) + "?")
varName.append(input())
return varName #return saves the result of the function to be utilized elsewhere
def plotVar(var, depths, figNum, xlabel):
plt.xlabel(xlabel, fontsize=15)
plt.ylabel("Depth (m)", fontsize=15)
plt.title(str(xlabel)+"vs Depth (m)", fontsize=20)
plt.gca().invert_yaxis()
plt.plot(var,z)
plt.show()
def main():
s = [26.1, 26.2, 26.6, 27.9, 28.2, 28.4, 28.9, 29.3, 30.0, 30.2] # salinities
t = [8.5, 7.8, 6.5, 6.4, 6.4, 6.4, 6.4, 6.4, 6.3, 6.1] # temps
z = [10, 32, 41, 50, 54, 64, 82, 100, 300, 500] # depths
p = sw.pres(z,45)
varList = getPlotVars()
print(varList)
if 's' in varList:
plotVar(s, z, 1, "Salinity (PSU) ")
if 't' in varList:
plotVar(t, z, 2, "Temperature (degC) ")
if 'p' in varList:
plotVar(p, z, 3, "Pressure (db) ")
You will notice in the plotVar function, the person who wrote this is attempting to plot using an undefined variable 'z'. However, all of this code executes with no errors in Spyder. In a different IDE (Enthought Canopy), an error occurs as expected.
Does anyone have any idea why this code runs?
