Finding job in data science with pure math PhD

Hello data science community! I'm not sure whether this is the right sub-forum to ask this question, if not please tell me where should I post this.

I'm a PhD student in pure mathematics doing research in useless super abstract stuff. Next year will be my last year. Since I'm in a really bad situation, therefore I'm looking for other options. Data science looks like something that is in demand these days. So I would like to know your suggestions and guidance about what can I do in this remaining time so I can get a job in data science after my PhD (in US).

I'd imagine that I need to get some kind of internship for the summer after my PhD and hope that I can get hired there after the internship. My knowledge of data science and machine learning is very basic (just had the online course of Andrew Ng!). I can take some data science related courses in this remaining time if that helps my CV. The time limits are very tight for me. I need to get a job for the summer after finishing my PhD (or at least an internship, so I can stay in US).

P.S. I did some google search and for example I find that Morgan Stanley has an exam for its summer internship for quant analyst. (I know that quant is not same as data scientist) so if you perform well on this exam you can get an interview which can lead to the internship and then potentially a job. One thing that I'm good at, is that I can get ready for any type of exam if I know what that exam is. So I wonder whether there are similar things for data science or not?
