Can RNN work with just one input?

Is it possible to creat a RNN such that there is only dimenson(or feature) in data.Of course we have a time series data.My confusion is that when there is only one input in the RNN as shown below,
That is in the second picture there is one yellow neuron.Is there a requirement to feed the information to other neuron in the hidden layer,wont one hidden layer with one neuron be sufficient?Can such a network identify pattern in time series models?
